About this day
Leave the city behind and follow the Athens Riviera south, with the sea at your side almost all the way. Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel and pauses above Lake Vouliagmeni, where turquoise water lies beneath a limestone cliff.
At Cape Sounion the Temple of Poseidon stands at the tip of a headland some 60 metres above the Aegean. You have about an hour and a half to walk the site and take in the view, while your chauffeur waits for you in the car park.
Choose the morning departure for clear light and a quieter site, or the 17:30 departure, offered April to September, to watch the sun sink into the sea. Entry is by timed slot, so book your ticket for the hour you arrive. The site closes at sunset, but the view from the headland lasts until dark.

From the roadside viewpoint you look down on a mineral-water lake set under a sheer limestone cliff, a few steps from the sea. It is right on the route, so the stop adds almost nothing to the drive.

Walk up to the 5th-century BC temple, circle the columns and look out over the sea and the islands from the cliff edge. Entry is by timed slot and the site closes at sunset, so book the hour you will arrive; tickets for Greek state sites are sold on the official e-ticket site hhticket.gr and at the gate. Your chauffeur waits in the car park below.
