About this day

Meteora is one of the most extraordinary sights in Europe: monasteries built on top of sheer rock pillars above the plain of Thessaly. It is a long way from Athens, so the day starts early and your chauffeur does all the driving while you rest.

On the motorway north you pause at Thermopylae for a few minutes at the Leonidas monument. At Meteora the car follows the loop road between the rocks, stopping at the monasteries and viewpoints you want to see. Each monastery closes on one day of the week, but at least two are open every day. Please cover shoulders and knees to enter.

After about three hours among the rocks you come down to Kalambaka for a late lunch, then settle in for the drive back to your hotel in Athens.

Your day, stop by stop

A guide plan for the 06:30 departure; times are approximate.

  1. 06:30

    Pick-up at your hotel

    Or any address in Athens.

  2. ~08:50

    1. Thermopylae, Leonidas monument · 20 min here

A short stop at the bronze statue of Leonidas.

The monument stands right beside the old Athens–Lamia road, opposite the hill where the last of the 300 Spartans fell. It is a quick leg-stretch on the way north.

  3. ~11:15

    2. Meteora monasteries and viewpoints · 180 min here

Monasteries on sheer rock pillars, and the views between them.

The car follows the road around the rocks, stopping at the Great Meteoron, the largest of the monasteries, and at the viewpoints between them. Each monastery charges a small entry fee at the door and has its own closing day; women are asked to wear a skirt, and wraps are usually lent at the entrance. Expect steps: most monasteries are reached by a stairway cut into the rock.

  4. ~14:25

    3. Kalambaka · 45 min here

A late lunch in the town beneath the rocks.

Kalambaka sits right at the foot of the pillars, so the rocks tower over the tavernas on its main streets. After lunch your chauffeur takes the motorway back to Athens.

  5. ~19:30

    Back at your hotel

    About 13 hours after pick-up.
