Delphi & Arachova

Delphi was the centre of the ancient Greek world, and it still feels that way: terraces of temples and treasuries climbing the slopes of Mount Parnassus above an olive valley that runs down to the sea. Your chauffeur picks you up early, so you reach the site ahead of the heat and the coaches.

You have close to three hours for the sanctuary and its museum, home of the bronze Charioteer. The museum tells the story clearly, so you can explore entirely at your own pace while your chauffeur waits.

On the way back you stop in Arachova, a stone village perched on the mountainside, for lunch, a coffee and a stroll through its lanes. Then sit back for the drive home to your hotel.

   The sanctuary of Apollo and the museum of the bronze Charioteer.

   Climb the Sacred Way past the Treasury of the Athenians to the Temple of Apollo, the theatre and the stadium, then cool off in the museum a few hundred metres down the road. One combined ticket covers the site and the museum; tickets for Greek state sites are sold on the official e-ticket site hhticket.gr and at the gate. Comfortable shoes help: the path is steep and stony.

   A stone mountain village for lunch and a stroll.

   Arachova clings to the side of Parnassus, with a main street of cafés, tavernas and local shops selling cheese, honey and woven rugs. Climb the steps to the clock tower of Agios Georgios for the view, then enjoy a slow lunch before the drive back.
